Breakthroughs Happen With Perseverance
Many financial advisors struggle with their marketing and they sometimes give up before an inspiring breakthrough occurs. “Advisors who persevere can make their marketing breakthrough a reality,” says Martin R. Baird, president of Annapolis, Md.-based Advisor Marketing and author of The 7 Deadly Sins of Advisor Marketing. “That gives them the encouragement they need to keep on marketing and growing their business.” Baird offers the following five tips to help advisors push for marketing success. Tip Number 1. Patience and learning are the cornerstone of great marketing. “It’s easy to get frustrated and give up,” Baird says. “It’s easy to stop because you think it will never work. If you walk away, your challenge is to come back and try again.” Tip Number 2. Review the marketing you have done to see what didn’t work and how it can be improved. “Look at every mailer that didn’t work and find out why it didn’t,” Baird suggests. “Look at every seminar you’ve held and figure out how you can sign up five fewer mildly interested attendees and replace them with three qualified prospects.” Tip Number 3. Think of marketing as a long-term commitment. “Successes may happen in spurts but in the final analysis, marketing isn’t a sprint, it’s a marathon,” Baird points out. “The amazing breakthroughs happen for those who persevere.’ Tip Number 4. Don’t be a bench warmer. “For years, many financial professionals have sat on the sidelines, warming the marketing bench,” Baird says. “They’ve done little or no marketing because they believe nothing will work. That’s not true. Marketing breakthroughs happen every day but they require marketing activity. It’s time to get off the bench and get back in the game.” Tip Number 5. Try something new. “Something new could be something old because it hasn’t been done in a long time,” Baird notes. “Look back at what worked in the past and that has not been abused lately.” Advisors must take their marketing by the horns to make things happen. “It will take effort and patience but it can be done and now is a great time to do it,” Baird says. “George Clason once said that where there is determination, the way will be found. Advisors will succeed with their marketing if they are determined to make it happen.” Advisor Marketing provides a variety of services to financial advisors to help them improve their marketing methods and increase revenues, including seminars and conference speaking engagements on such topics as referrals, marketing, client communication and transitioning to fee.
